San diego wild animal park

In 2007 there was a fire that destroyed alot of the wild animal park. So my intersession went to the wild animal park were we got a speach from a man named Mike Mace who is the bird curator at the wild animal park. He told us all the birds in the park where they were and if another fire starts how to choose what birds to save. He told us how two birds were killed in the fire that were endangered speices. Then another person came and told us about thge plants and how they got effected he told us to try to walk carefully and try not to walk in bushes incase of snakes. Then we all went on a truck and drove to the outskirts of the desert and started planting little trees. we got to see some hippos pass by and gizzels. we didnt plant for very long but it made me feel good that I was helping animals and plants alike.

Gompers charter school

Today we went to a school called Gompers charter middle school. This school started out as a place described like a prison because every turn you make you have a 80% chance of running into a beating. Also every day the kids would have a new teacher because the teachers would hate the school and have better chances of becoming a school somewhere else. So the solution to this is they started to cage these kids like animals to stop fighting because they feared for something worse. But a man came to the school who changed it all the only way they could get some good teachers was to turn it into a charter school so they had parents volunteer to go door to door in the rain and ask for a signature for the school to become a charter school. So now the school has turned out better than HTMMA. they have alot of teachers and cool stuff to work with but they put a strict uniform that the kids have to wear because its a college prep school.

Uganda refugee

A man named Walter Lam came to our class and told us about his life in Uganda and how he became a refugee from Uganda and ended up in San Diego. His story starts out he is coming back from school and his neighbor warned him not to go back to his house Walter asked him why and he said that the police of Uganda is waiting for him and is going to arrest him so Walter then decides to stay with this man but he then gets worried the police will find him so he flees to Kenya. His dream was to become a doctor so he can help people so he goes back to Uganda and goes to college but he ends up having to flee once again to Kenya and has to leave his wife and kids behind but his wife decides to try to flee so they did but they end up losing there son who was killed. Walter then gets a opportunity to become part of the government and help his people but finds out there are these rebels who are fighting the government and end up taking over the government so he flees for a third time and lives in Kenya. One day in Kenya Walter finds out that the people who he fled with were found and taken back to Uganda so Walter decides to get farther away from Uganda so he goes to Italy were he stays and goes to San Diego and finds out how much things we have to give that his Country has never even close to having the things we have so to him the United states is heaven on earth. He starts a Job as a security guard and starts a program about helping kids in Uganda get a education. In Uganda school is not a top priority so it costs a lot of money. When the people finish high school they come here to start a new life and find out that just in a apartment its heaven because the huts that people live in Uganda are about the size of your bathroom imagine that. Also the way people get water is they have to wait in a line the hole day and only get a bucket full of drinkable water to drink. and no one has a private bathroom they all have to go in a small outhouse imagine that? a small one stall bathroom that more than 1000 people use that you have to use. so when the people come to the United states they cant believe the things they have in a small apartment like a good bed and a shower but when people who were born here see these things they complain that the showers to small or the bed isn't comfy but to these refugees its like a dream come true. This man has changed my life because now i really now that I am gifted to have fresh water anytime or that I have a nice bed to sleep on or a T.V. and now i know that I am lucky to have any of these things and also that I now that I am a person that can have a good life. So the next time you have anything that you are about to complain about just remember the People in Uganda who don't have the luxury to use any of this so please remember this man Walter Lam because he is a hero for the people in Uganda.

Intersession

My first trip was to a Landfill. It was not that stinky as everyone would expect. I learned that lots of sea gulls fly to the landfill and try to eat the trash in the landfill so the workers there shoot these firecrackers in the air to scare them off because the seagulls are in the way of the jets that takeoff from the base next to the landfill and if the seagulls get sucked into the engine which can cause major damage to the 1 million dollar jets. Also in 4 years the landfill will be completly filled up with trash.
when we got to look at the trash that was there about half of the trash is plastic bags that the workers dont pickout they just pour it in. In the landfill they havbe prisoners from the jail that get payed one dollor a hour. they can use that money to buy candy and snacks from a shop in the jail so they could get things to eat that taste good. plus would you rather spend the day in a cell or be outside working and getting exercise.
